Yep, the minute we see someone done up we feel down trodden.

The last ten days I kept track of how many times I witnessed this phenomenon.

Believe it or not, 10 out of 10 days I saw it happen. And sadly, the 10th day was me.

Sure enough some young sprightly soul named Kelly frolicked into my office on Thursday...

Miraculously when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror moments later I had gained 10lbs and was in dire need of crest whitening strips.

Funny how that happens...

What is not funny; however, is the fact that Thursday I did not blow dry my hair.

And lipstick... hello? Who does her make-up in the am and forgets to put on lips?

DOUBLE HELLO??? I DO!!!!

So what do we do girls? I mean NONE of us are immune to it.

We could just stab all the pretty bi***es in the eyes and spread nasty rumors about them... just kidding.

But that would not be good karma, cuties!

A cutie will wake up tomorrow and go to her closet with a smile plastered on her face. No matter what she chooses she will stick to her guns all day! 

And when her insecurities kick in because Betty lost 10 lbs... and she happened to spend last night baking a "cake", she will force herself to give Betty a hug.

Girlfriends, at the core we are all SISTERS.

So just fill the room with love and light and trust that you are just as amazing as you were when you woke up this morning. I truly believe positive energy can not only change our outlook on life but our bodies, as well.

I promise it will come back ten-fold. Someday you will be in a hurry, in flip flops, and void of make up.

And someone will notice how pretty you are and compliment you on your true beauty. Ask my co-worker Carol. Today it actually happened to her. Unfortunately, she would not let me take a picture to prove it.

JONESIN' FOR JAVA

So I am obsessed with coffee.  Believe it or not a  cappuccino excites me ALMOST as much as trying on a pair of Christian Louboutin's. I don't know what it is about coffee... maybe it is the way it plays with my emotions. 

It can make my heart palpitate harder than a semi nude photo of Patrick Dempsey.

It can make me happy

Give me two cups and I am convinced I have the answer to world hunger.

  

 (hence, my husband has restricted me to one cup half caf/half decaf a day.)

And coffee can do other things to me

Now my favorite coffee, is not Starbucks. It is Coffee Bean. Coffee Bean's creme brulée flavor to be exact. They only serve flavored coffee till 11am and they rotate their flavors They have about 10 flavors in all. So it feels like Christmas when I walk through those double doors and smell the brulée brewing.

Today my friend's was Creme Brulée day.

My mornings are timed out to the last millisecond. If I leave the house at exactly 10:00am I can ensure I will not only get flavored coffee but make it to work by 10:30.

However, today I woke up late. 

10:20 I raced out of the house.

10:25 I was greeted by bumper to bumper traffic.

 10:51 I finally exited the highway. And was cut off in the parking lot by a truck.

 10:57 I found a new spot.

10:59 I ran through the doors as the barista was getting ready to throw the rest of the creme bruleé away... "Noooooo!" I yelled. She turned,giggled and said, "You're just in time!".

11:05 I skipped out the door coffee in hand. I couldn't wait to race to my desk and start my day.

11:15am Here is what happened

Now, what is the closet karma lesson to be learned here? You need to take a deep breath, slow down and enjoy life? Your happiness should never hinge on a cup of coffee or anything material? If your your closet is out of order your whole day will be in disorder?

Nah, I don't think so. I think Coffee Bean needs to learn to stop acting like the gestapo when it comes to flavored coffee AND SERVE IT ALL DAY!  Geeze people someone could get hurt!

But more  importantly, sometimes you just need to sit back and laugh and order yourself up a Starbucks.

Next week laugh off one thing that normally would ruin your day. Turn that frown, (umm not your coffee cup) upside down.

TACKLING TRAVEL KARMA!

  Summer is a time for adventure, spontaneous bliss, and SUITCASES!

So how do you keep a zen state of mind when your bag is exploding?

The hotel hangers are sparse! And your accessories??....What accessories?!

All you see is a balled up mess.  I travel A LOT. Like a REAL lot.

Even though I have had more travel mishaps than I care to admit, here a few road rules I never break:

1.) PACK WITH YOUR SPACE IN MIND

For example: If you know you are staying in a hotel where you don't have a lot of hanging space you need to think about packing more accessories than clothes.  I separate my wardrobe choices into four piles--Gold, Silver, Neutral and Color.  This way I make sure I bring an accessory for each category.  Then I individually zip-lock all my earrings and necklaces to make sure they don't tangle and ensure they don't take up a lot of space.

I also make sure I bring non-wrinkling materials on the road.  That way if there is no space in the closet I will still have a smashing wardrobe.

2.) HONE IN ON YOUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Whether it is car camping or a four-star hotel jaunt, you need to immediately make yourself feel at home. Because I spend so much time on the road, I always bring a small travel candle with me.  I find when I light it, it instantly puts my brain in a "zen" state of mind.  If you're camping...bring your favorite pillow or blanket. Anything that reminds you that your daily routine doesn't have to be ditched when your on the road.

3.) UN-CLOSET YOUR KARMA IMMEDIATELY

After I light my candle the first thing I do is unpack my suitcase.  That way I feel at home and can relax.  I make sure to lay all my accessories out so they can be seen . I line up my shoes and hang my clothes in order of what I have scheduled.  For example:  Work outfits for day, dresses for night.

 

That way I know my day-night options as soon as I look at the closet.  I also no longer over-pack. Over-packing makes you lazy.  You never have enough space to lay everything out so you end up keeping the majority of your clothes in your suitcase.  I have found that 65% of women said they wear less than half of what they pack when they travel.  That means the majority of us are packing DOUBLE what we need! YIKES!

Just remember the goal is to minimize the chaos in your closet so you can relax and enjoy your vacation :)

WHAT IS THAT SILLY SLIT IN MY SPANX?

THE SECRET TO THE SLIT IN YOUR SPANX...

Boys laugh at bathroom banter. 

But as gabby as us gals can be, the bathroom...is usually A BOYCOTTED subject.

And while I agree the loo should stay, lets say, a "dirty little secret," there are times we need to break protocol for the betterment of women kind.

When I worked on "The Tyra Banks Show" I had heard a rumor from Tyra herself that you can go to the bathroom without pulling your Spanx down.  But I have to be honest, she talked about a lot of things I would never try at home so I sort of dismissed the thought.  I would just yank, and tug, and pull down...then I would hope that no "overflow" would hit the wad of nylon wrapped around my ankles as I stood hovering over the toilet seat.

Finally, I would pray as I did the "running man" in place, pulling the Spanx back up.  I hoped an angel would land them exactly where they had been...so they would not slip and create a fat roll..

...until one day when one of my best girlfriends changed my life.

At a wedding, my friend Carolyn said, "You know the hole is for peeing, right?"

You see, I had been wearing Spanx since the dawn of Spanx, and I never noticed that my new Spanx now had a slit in them.

Perplexed, I looked down and there it was, staring right at me...

Terrified, I said , "No way!  If I miss, I'm screwed for the rest of the wedding because I will have to ditch the Spanx and reveal the burrito baby I am hiding!".

She fed me a few more cocktails and coaxed me back into the ladies room where she told me to literally sit, spread, and lean forward.  I was terrified to say the least, but Carolyn was not letting me at out that stall until I performed. And low and behold... a few rum and cokes and a glass of water later, it worked!

Now ladies, you are going to have to trust me on this one.  I know it's scary but I swear it works!  I highly suggest the buddy system because it will ease your fears.  Carolyn was taught by her friend Emily...and now girls, it is my turn to pass the torch.

I know you are mortified,when I told my good friend Josie, she was too....

But I explained to her she needed to focus on all the free time she will have once her Spanx bathroom trips are reduced from 25 minutes to 5!  And I pointed out that I am basically issuing a Public Service Announcement... after a few glasses of wine, she reluctantly agreed to let me show her just how the deed is done.

Step 1:  Do not be afraid to sit on the seat . Think of the Spanx as a seat cover.

Step 2:  In a seated squat position lean as far forward as you can...

(without falling in of course)

Now take a deep breath... and relax

When you lean forward all the way the slit will open naturally like this...

Step 3:  Trust your Spanx will not spill!

Now that wasn't so bad was it?  Today, I leave you with one last word of advice.  Proceed with caution if you have the newest model of Spanx.

I hear it tends to shift the slit just slightly to the right...which I am sure you can imagine could be...a little messy.

LEARNING TO SHINE -EVEN WHEN YOU FEEL YOUR LIGHT HAS BURNT OUT

On Closet Karma we talk a lot about how feeling good about yourself is a "state of mind".  And no matter what is going on in the "outside" world you have to find a way to keep your "inner" light shining bright. Recently, my own mantra was put to the test.  My Yorkie Cassie, who was my best friend, confidant, and fellow fashionista passed away in an unexpected accident July 3rd.  She was only 8.5 years old.

She saw more states in the U.S. than most people do in a lifetime. (25 in total) and almost every major city.

CASSIE VISITED OUR NATIONS CAPITOL AND GOT TO SEE WHERE I GOT MY START IN TV

We snuck her into, restaurants, hotels and ever bars.  She would go shopping with me and have no qualms about letting me know when she thought it was time to put the credit card away and head home. We literally had a secret language her and I.  She would look up at me and say with her eye's, "mommy, I love you."

 

She was there the day Brian and I launched Solas out of our two bedroom apartment 6 years ago.  She was on set the first time I ever did the news live.  She jumped and wagged her tail the day we screamed with joy that we got featured in People Magazine.  She watched lifetime movies with me on Sundays.

She wiped my tears with kisses the year the recession hit and many of our stores started closing up shop. She got used to me asking her what accessory I should pick in the morning.

And best of all she allowed me to dress her up as often as I liked!

She inspired me to write Closet Karma and she gave Brian and I the strength to tell our story in our documentary, Big Time, which is coming out next year.  She believed in me unconditionally and anyone who knew her knew she wasn't just a dog she was what we called a "manimal".

CASSIE AND HER FRIENDS AT HER 8th BIRTHDAY 2009

It is easy to inspire people and talk about my weight gain or my fried eyebrows or my spanx "roll" because I was blessed with Cassie in my life.  But it is has been a challenge to truly find a way to spark that light when I feel so alone.  I have struggled the past 2 weeks.  At first I felt like giving up, I didn't care about anything, I especially didn't care about shining my light for others to see.  Then slowly...I started to remember how Cassie, without thinking...without even trying, let her light shine everyday to anyone she met.

I am sure there were times when it was too hot outside or too cold inside and she didn't feel like wearing that silly dress I put on her...

ACTUALLY HER DADDY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS ONE! GO GATORS!

or letting her be our pillow at night...

But she did it all because she was pure love.

So now when I get up in the morning I actually take time to blow dry my hair and put on full face.  I wear my heels to work, even if it is with a pair of shorts.  During the day I try and at least make one person laugh at work.  Every night before I go to bed I snuggle up to her blanket and say a prayer for a friend in need.  Because that is what Cassie would do. Sure, I have my moments where I break down and cry uncontrollably, but I am slowly realizing that the light she had inside has not died, I just have to seek it out.

And sometimes when we are not strong enough to light the flame ourselves we just have to reach for a match from someone else's heart to get us started.

This week find love everyday in something that you do, even when its hard.  Give love to someone new even if you feel they don't deserve it.  The only way to truly love ourselves is to generate love to others.

MAN HANDLING SPANX

So it's 4th of July weekend and while everyone is blogging about what to wear on the BEACH, I thought it best to talk about what to wear for the AFTERMATH.  Translation:  "How do you keep your summer bumping after all that booze and barbeque you just ate?"  Which of course brings us once again to SPANX!

HOW TO MANHANDLE YOUR SPANX

So you are on the dance floor showing Enrique from Argentina a good time 1999 style...

 

You're gazing into each others eyes as he whispers, "Da blue in your eyes is deep like da sea"

He reaches for you... yearning to bring your two dance floor thumping bodies closer.  Suddenly, your vision of sunset tangos comes to a screeching halt as you flinch in reflex and think ..."OH DEAR GOD I AM WEARING SPANX!... "

Now you are in quite the predicament, and all you keep saying to yourself is, "I should have skipped that Taco Bell run at 2 AM."

 

Embarrassed and flubbering, you flee the scene telling Enrique, "I think I'd better take a rain check."

Now before you get your panties all in a pinch I ask you this....if you were wearing nylons with an extra control top, would you worry?  No!  So do yourself a favor and act likes it no big deal.  So many times we create our biggest fear.  Plus, the club is bumping and it's dark in there he can't tell if you have hose on!

And lets say you do find yourself hooking up later that night and your banging "bod" Argentinian turns out to be more like boozing "Billy" from "St Elmo's Fire"...  asking you point blank about your nylon 'scuba suit.'

I say.....LIE OR LEAVE LADIES!  He doesn't deserve the truth!

My favorites lines to use are below:

-"Well actually it's my lingerie and you're never going to get a chance to see it now!" 

-"Oh, they're SPANX!  I wear them so I don't have to wear any underwear, I hate pan-ty lines!"

(I promise you a panty-less conversation will take his mind off your scuba suite)

- "I am actually training to free dive off the Great Barrier Reef, this helps me practice holding my breath longer."

(humor, I find always goes a long way.)

All joking aside ladies, it's 2010 and if a man can't "handle" your Spanx then he is not man enough for you! Don't worry about when and if he finds out. I am sure he has many "hairier" and worse secrets you will find unveil in due time. And if wearing Spanx makes you feel SPANTASTIC in that hot little dress, you need to go for it!  It's way worth the booze and barbeque on the 4th!

SURVIVING SPANX

So since it's summer...I thought it fitting to talk about a summery topic...like...SPANX?!?!

 I know, you thought I was going to open up with swimwear, but you can go check your local Lucky Mag or Cosmo for that. 

Spanx are the sure thing we go to when our crash diet has crashed, our New Year's gym resolution has expired, and we may have had a few margaritas and carne asada at our neighbor's summer fiesta.

After a night of indulgence, there's nothing worse than waking up and realizing, "I have to fit into that dress tonight!" 

"The sales lady must have totally  f'&%#d up and given me the wrong size?  That dress was for sure bigger!"

Years ago, our fore-fashionistas used to have to squeeze into corsets to get their butts into their coveted gowns after gorging.  

FOR MANY GALS A SIZE 17-inch WAIST WAS IDEAL.  THIS WAS ACHIEVED BY LACING THEIR CORSETS TIGHTER AND TIGHTER UNTIL THEIR RIB CAGES BECAME DEFORMED!  AGGH!

 

YIKES!  I JUST WANT TO HIDE MY BURRITO BABY!

Anyways, nowadays we have (thank God!) Spanx.

Spanx makes tummies look flat, butts look lifted, and it hides that burrito we ate at 2AM.  That's what we all talk about right?  How much we love our Spanx.  But when I told a group of my friends (in front of their significant others) that I wanted to blog about surviving Spanx, I was surprised to hear a hush come over the room..."Your not supposed to talk about that!"

Well, Ladies, if were not supposed to talk about it we're definitely not supposed to do this...

Now, unfortunately Spanx is not a secret in my home.  Brian has survived everything from the first time l pee'd in them to physically holding them in place as I did the running man to properly pull them up.

But lets face it, around men,  SPANX is usually the nylon Elephant in the room.  We are all terrified they will find out our tube a toothpaste squeezing secret!  Or worse, we are terrified they will touch that weird back fat roll that appears when we apply them wrong.  And that slit between our legs?  How ever shall we tinkle between it?!

Now before you guys start getting all 1960's on me, and burn your spanx, there is a way to live happily ever after with Spanx.

I have scoured the nation determined to unveil all of the mysteries of SPANX!

But in order to prep you for the Spanxtastic time we are about to have, remember you have to start by loving not only your spanx...but you!  All of you!

You don't have to send a picture of your fat rolls to thousands of people like I did to prove your love for your body.  But you do have to stop worrying about if "Enrique" is going to realize you have a nylon girdle under that gown.  The reality is that we don't feel ashamed when we wear make up to cover our zits and we don't hide that we wear 4 inch heels when we are 5'3".  So we shouldn't feel bad about covering up our burrito babies!  Heck, I bet a bunch of beer guzzling boys out there would love to have something invented that covered that Buddha belly!

Always A Bridesmaid...

...and very often a wedding guest.  It's officially that time of the year, friends: WEDDING TIME.

Not my wedding!  NOOOOOOOO.  Let's not get ahead of ourselves!  Hooo hooooo!  Noooooooo.  No.

Nope, it's just every friend I've ever had seems to be getting married this summer.  Ok, that's an exaggeration.  The truth is, I am going to seven weddings in five months.  Seven.  (That's five too many for a girl with one black dress and a very real hatred of the traditional "I'm Getting Married So Let's Get All My Girlfriends Together and Wear Penis Hats in Public" Bachelorette Pary.)  But the nuptials are raging in my part of the world, and I'm rolling with it.  I have multiple bridesmaid dresses in my closet right now.  I am a more than frequent registry visitor on Bed, Bath & Beyond.  I have a stash of candy wedding favors.  And I have started to rate the weddings I go to so that I can give out imaginary superlative awards at the end of the summer. 

"Oooh, Becky, I loved the antique chic of your wedding website, but the reception appetizers were too few and far between, aand there weren't enough vegetarian options.  Minus six points.  On the upside, you are hereby awarded the Most Likely to Have a Kickass Honeymoon!!  Congrats, Becky and Jake!!!"

Sigh.  It's terrible. 

What's worse are the details.  What do I give them to kick off the rest of their married lives?  Do I go to the Rehearsal Dinner or skip it and go to the post-wedding brunch the day after?  Do I eat lunch before their inevitably long wedding ceremony?  Or save it so I can chow down on ample free munchies at the reception?  Do I drink too much BEFORE dinner at the open bar or drink too much DURING dinner when the waiters endlessly refill your wineglass?  And of course...WHAT DO I WEAR?!

At the last wedding we went to, the ceremony was on the beach, and the invitation called for "Luau attire."  Which is just confusing.  What the hell is Luau attire?!  Who's been to a Luau?  I mean, the Tanner Family went to one in that episode of "Full House" when they all go to Hawaii, but I don't think secondhand rerun experience counts for real knowledge of a luau. 

I ended up wearing a reddish flowery sort of dress with sandals.  Got the job done!

Last weekend, though, I was downright scared.  We were going to a big wedding at a big, fancy, beautiful Beverly Hills hotel, and I had nothing to wear.  NOTHING.  Twenty-six years accumulating a wardrobe, and there's nothing suitable for a fancypants nuptials.

I think I did okay though.  I got this bad boy for $40 at the sale rack at Anthropologie whaaaa?!  This is the bargain every girl dreams of.  Especially this girl!  (I literally dream about living in an Anthropologie store.  I've thought about just crawling into one of the sample beds at closing time and see if they notice...)

But I needed to kick up the dress a little.  Make it uber fancypants.  Lucky for me, I know this hot stuff designer named KK who has a rockstar line of uber awesome handbags.  Look at me rocking out my Solas bag!  

I think the handbag saved me.  Weddings of dear friends are beautiful, wonderful days I'm honored to share, but the sheer number of them starts to wear you down a little...unless you have something to look forward to too!  Everyone may be looking at the bride, but that doesn't mean I can't look amazing too...

CLOSET TALK... WITH JILL S.

If I had to give my closet a personality it would be Kramer from Seinfeld. My closet sort of blows into a room making this dramatic awkward entrance "hipster doofus" style and words like chaos,outdated,cramped and practical come to mind.

I would describe myself as horribly anal and organized. But my job requires me to be on my toes so I can not miss a detail. I am a United States Pretrial Services Officer. Basically, my day is spent managing prisoners and defendants and accessing what is their flight risk ect... and if they are eligible for bail. And even though I am not exactly short, (I stand at 5'11) I do it all in a pair of high heels and "hoes"! (as in panty of course:)

  My boyfriend is 6'3

My work has a dress code so my closet is over flowing with suites,skirts and heels in the tones of browns,blacks or beiges. Unfortunately, nylons are also a required part of my uniform.

Soon as the clock strikes Friday night I can not wait to rush home and throw on a pair of jeans and tennis shoes!

Sometimes my closet is a 180 of my life. I toss my clothes inside and pile up everything like a tower. And allow NO ONE but my kitty inside. Usually this happens on a day when I am either so exhausted from work I am too lazy to deal with hanging everything in its rightful spot or I am too busy to spend more than 1 minute in my closet. That is one of the reasons I love that my closet has a door:)

I wish I could spend more time playing in my closet but when you have to worry about dressing up everyday at work you sort of want to take a vacation from your closet on the weekend. I have found that purses are a passion of mine and I enjoy playing with different colored clutches ect... on the weekend. (Of course I own several  solas').

I feel your closet is your confidence. You should never be afraid to wear whats inside!  Whether it is putting on a pair of heels when your 5'11 or going out in a pair of sweats... always be true to yourself!  Because from "doofus" to "dynamite" it is all IN STYLE!
